Motivate people in difficult times. Here are some tips for communicating effectively with your people so that they are motivated to keep moving forward.

Explain the so what? Your people want to know why their work still matters. How is it meaningful to the bigger picture of what your organisation needs to achieve right now? Help them to understand the link.

Listen to them. What matters to your people at this time? Show you understand their worries and their reality. Use that insight to inform your communication and show you genuinely care.

Be open & honest. Share what’s really going on across your organisation right now, good and bad. Show that you trust your people by having open, grown up conversations with them.

Create new goals. The goals you were working towards 6 weeks ago may no longer be relevant; there are probably too many unknowns to set distant new ones. Involve people in setting new short-term goals – this will create a sense of ownership and purpose.

Build authenticity. Some days are good, some days are bad. For every person in your organisation. Feeling listened to, recognised and trusted creates a sense of togetherness.
